Anyone having disagreements on how natural hair looks? This seems to be common for women transitioning to their natural hair having others comment on how their hair looks. Also women feeling self conscious about their natural hair wanting to know should they say anything on educating those individuals about the natural benefits and defending how their hair looks? I pondered this question on how do you deal with this? I was always considered to have good and long hair, but when I was relaxing my hair and their was new growth, I am the first person people would say, "You need to go get your hair done." or "Did you comb your hair?" Now that I am transitioning my hair and have done mini chops, I've even heard "Don't cut your hair anymore." So here is my thoughts on do you educate them or ignore it.
If someone is interested in being enlightened, that is the best time to share. However, if someone is not interested in being educated and have already made up their mind on what they believe, it is not likely they will listen to anything you have to say, regardless that you maybe speaking the truth. Especially if they start to argue with you. Nothing can be heard or gained when two people are having an argument and talking over each other. This is advice I heard from my church once, Choose not to be offended. This is hard advice to follow, but I still try to practice it to the best of my abilities. I've always had what my family called long and good hair. But if my hair is not relaxed and the front is full of new growth its oh, you need to go get your hair done or did you comb your hair? The newest is don't cut your hair anymore (as I've been transitioning my relaxed hair to a more natural state). I think its a shock for people who know me to see my hair so short, its a shock for me too. I am still in length shock. I had an Oh moment when I realized the other day I was telling my oldest not to be upset at her younger sibling. I told her if you spend so much time reacting to every little thing someone says or does, you are going to spend alot of time upset. I realized I needed to do better at following my own words and being a better example at not letting people with their well or unkind intentions upset me. I think what will be more powerful than words, is loving your hair. When they see how much you love your hair and how their words don't mean anything, it will definitely make them stop and think. People tend to notice when someone's light and confidence is really shining.
