Possible Side Effects of Folic Acid
* I was passed along this information by a homeopathic midwife. There is a difference between folate and folic acid. Folate is naturally found in our foods, but folic acid is the synthetic form of folate. If your body can not break down the folic acid, you might have an increased risk of having a baby with tongue tie. However, there is contradicting information if folic acid is the cause for the tongue tie or if it is mostly genetics or both. When a baby is tongue tied, it can affect breastfeeding. Something to keep in mind when deciding to consume higher than recommended levels of folic acid.
* Folic acid is recommended by most obstetricians and other healthcare professionals to help decrease the risk of birth defects, such as spina bifida. (I am not sure where I currently stand on this debate, since I have been actively taking pre-natal vitamins since I was 19 years old for fertility health, and have taken it during both of my pregnancies and while breastfeeding both of my children. My first two children did not come out tongue tied, although my 2nd had a normal lip tie that caused no issues with breastfeeding and was told my Ped Dentist it would resolve itself).
