I heard that many studies have been done about Vitex in Europe. There is limited studies done on it in the United States. One of my biggest concerns since Vitex is not meant for a pregnant mother to take, was how would a woman taking Vitex be sure to not consume it when she is trying to conceive and becomes pregnant? I have also read mixed advice on when you become pregnant if you should wean off of Vitex gradually or quit cold turkey. Well, the lactation consultant who gave the information about taking Vitex and Vitamin B6 addressed this concern with, a mother should stop taking Vitex when she becomes pregnant. But also added, Vitex after six weeks of pregnancy is not good, but before then should be fine. So women who are tracking their cycles consistently by charting their BBT (Basal Body Temperature) at the same time every morning and confirm ovulation with OPKs (ovulation prediction kits) and / or cervical mucus may find out they are pregnant sooner than six weeks or before their missed period. Those women will have time to gradually wean a week or two off of Vitex.
Another mom from my message boards said she was sensitive to Vitex so when she gets off it cold turkey she felt withdrawal symptoms, such as PMS moodiness and was very emotional.
Some interesting and contradicting information was shared by another mom on my message boards, she said a couple of different naturopaths online recommended stopping vitex a few days before you need to ovulate and the stopping it will make you ovulate within a few days. She reported to stop taking the vitex on a Friday (her cycle day 21), and on cycle day 23, a Sunday she got her positive OPK. She claims her OPKs were getting lighter and lighter instead of darker when she did not stop the vitex. What I love about that idea is you don't have to worry that you might still be taking it while pregnant.
