One of the common issues breastfeeding women who are trying to conceive run into is a short luteal phase, meaning a luteal phase below 10. You need a minimum of 10 to become pregnant. The average luteal phase is 14. So a luteal phase is between 10-16. If you have a short luteal phase, the egg does not have enough time to properly implant.
Another concern with trying to conceive while breastfeeding is if the mom has low progesterone. So it almost seems like a given that using over the counter progesterone would be a win-win, lengthen the short luteal phase and help increase the low progesterone.
According to the authors that write for the website About.com on miscarriages, "Experts are not sure if progesterone supplements can prevent miscarriages. The experts say to be wary of progesterone creams derived from wild yams because they do not contain any progesterone. They contain a chemical that can be converted to progesterone in a laboratory but not converted to progesterone in the body. But there are progesterone creams on the market that do contain real progesterone and can be absorbed by the body. However, these creams are highly variable in the amount of progesterone they contain. Some doctors have reported patients using the creams ending up with extremely high progesterone levels, some even 10 to 100 times the normal level found in the body. Other creams contain much smaller amounts, but with a lot of variabilities in how well it is absorbed. No studies have looked at how a baby might be affected if a mother has an extremely high progesterone level in pregnancy while using an unregulated progesterone cream” (Danielsson).
According to Natural Fertility Info, "One of the most common treatments for lengthening a woman’s luteal phase is to use progesterone cream. If the problem begins with low Luteinizing Hormone, then just adding progesterone may not work" (Rodriquez).
