Why would a woman be put on Metformin?
If she has any of the following conditions:
- Type 2 Diabetes
- Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
- Lean Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
What is Type 2 Diabetes?
According to American Diabetes Association, "Diabetes causes the blood sugar levels in the body to rise higher than normal, also called hyperglycemia. In Type 2 Diabetes, insulin is not used properly, and a person may not know they have it in the beginning because the pancreas will make extra insulin and try to correct the problem. Eventually, the pancreas will not be able to make enough insulin or keep blood sugar levels normal" (Type 2).
What is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)?
According to the author, Elizabeth Willet, from the website, Natural Fertility Info.com, "PCOS is a female fertility health disorder that impacts the body's endocrine system" (Willett). The Womenshealth.gov's website contains information, such as "PCOS can affect every 1 in 10 women childbearing age. But is considered to be a common and treatable cause of infertility" (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome).
What does the drug Metformin do?
According to Drugs.com, "Metformin is an oral diabetes medicine and it helps control blood sugar levels. It is unknown if this medicine will harm an unborn baby, so any woman trying to conceive should discuss with her health care provider, such as a doctor if she is pregnant or plans to become pregnant and it is not recommended while breastfeeding to take this medicine" (Metformin).
Trying To Conceive With Metformin
According to conceiveeasy.com, "Metformin is also used to help women with PCOS conceive easier. Even for women who are not diabetic, metformin can help lower insulin levels in order to regulate a woman's menstrual cycle. Metformin has been proven to help both women who are overweight and women who have normal body mass index levels. Women with PCOS tend to have elevated insulin levels and metformin helps balance insulin levels" (Null).
Side Effects
I have heard that some side effects can be diareeha, upset stomach, nausea.
Online Success Stories
On one website post on page one, there were some antidote stories given of women diagnosed with PCOS and placed on metformin. Within the first seven posts, the women shared that they had become pregnant after using metformin. It seems the starting dose for many of these women were 1000 mg, and if that did not work they found success on 1500 mg. I have noticed some women also may take 500 mg, so how much and once or twice a day will depend on your health care provider and your specific needs. From these stories, many women became pregnant after 2-3 months of taking Metformin. To read the post, click here.
