Disposables $624.00 + Cloth Diapers $927.85 = $1,551 for 2 kids
Even using cloth after disposables,
we spent less money than we would have using disposable diapers and wipes alone.
Notes: I spent an estimated amount of $560 for 14 months of buying disposable diapers, buying 1 regular pack of disposable diapers once a week for $10. If we multiple that amount for 3 years, the amount of time my first child has been in diapers, I would have spent $1,440. We just had a second child. If we add another 3 years of disposable diapers going with the math we first proposed, we would spent an estimated amount of $2,880 for 2 children in diapers. We have spent: $927.85 on cloth diapers.
2013: We are still cloth diapering our toddler and were using both newborn disposables and cloth diapers for our new baby, before just using cloth diapers. We used the disposables mostly to finish the free pack given by the hospital, as well as use disposables until the umbilical cord stump fell off which occurred a little after the first week. (At the time we only had 2 Kissaluv newborn cloth diapers that had the snap down for the umbilical cord stump and I didn't know if I would have had enough newborn cloth diapers when I purchased the 2 packs of disposable newborn diapers during my second pregnancy). I was reminded why I prefer cloth diapers. At 2 weeks and 1 day, we went through 160 disposable baby wipes, for a toddler and baby, 1 free hospital size of 24 disposable newborn diapers and 2 regular size packs of 36 newborn disposable diapers. That is a grand total of 96 disposable diapers! The 2 regular size packs of newborn disposables cost $20 dollars and the 1 pack of 80 count disposable baby wipes that I bought was about $2 dollars (the other pack was free), making it a grand total for $22 dollars. I admit that sounds pretty good, until I think about if we were to continue with disposables (which we are not), minus the free pack from the hospital, I would spend about $20 dollars for 2 regular size packs of 36 disposable diapers (not including extra disposable baby wipes), bringing that total of $22 to $42 dollars for just one month. Any ways, I refuse to spend more money for 72 disposable diapers to last for another 2 weeks to only realize at 4 weeks and 108 newborn disposable diapers later, I would still have many more months of disposable diapers to go. I am thankful I have newborn-toddler size cloth diapers that I will re-use over and over for my second child's first year and maybe even the second year.
