- About Red Leaf Raspberry Tea
It is often recommended during pregnancy because it is said to help strengthen the uterus, and to help produce stronger contractions in labor. Some health care professionals may recommend five weeks for it to help soften the cervix.
- When to start Red Leaf Rasberry Tea
Thirty-nine weeks is the March of Dime's new definition for full-term in pregnancy. Some fertility literature recommends starting the tea at thirty-two weeks, but not before to allow it time to build in the body. One mom on a message board said she was advised by her midwife not to start it until after 36 weeks because it can cause uterine contractions and can cause you to go into labor early or miscarriage.
- What Brand To Use
My midwife actually recommends buying it loose leaf. She said our natural grocery sells it, so you can buy as little or as much as you want / need and cheaper than buying it already boxed.
- Tea or Supplement?
My midwife recommends the tea over the supplement.
According to Baby Center UK in an article, Can Raspberry Leaf bring on Labor, there are certain people who should not drink the tea:
- A previous labour lasted only three hours or less, from start to finish.
- You're scheduled to have a planned caesarean for a medical reason.
- You've had a caesarean before.
- You've had a premature labour before.
- You've had vaginal bleeding in the second half of pregnancy.
- Have a family or personal history of breast or ovarian cancer, endometriosis or fibroids.
- Are expecting a baby who is breech.
- Have any complications or health problems in your pregnancy, including high blood pressure.
- Are expecting twins.
They also caution, "If you have strong Braxton Hicks contractions after drinking the tea, cut the amount you drink or stop taking it" ("Can Raspberry Leaf Bring on Labour?").
- My Experience
My midwife said since I tend to have fast labors, I did not need to drink Red Leaf Raspberry Tea to help labor. She also said if I am not a big tea drinker, there is no need to force myself to drink it and said the important thing is staying hydrated. I did present my midwife with the information about my history of quick labors and my Endometriosis diagnosis and the suggestion that women with those should not drink the tea. Her personal opinion was I should be fine taking it if I choose to. With the conflicting information of when to start drinking the tea, I felt more comfortable starting the tea or supplement later, since I had no idea if I would go to 39 + weeks in my third pregnancy as I did with my first two pregnancies. My first pregnancy I went to 40 weeks and 2 days and my second pregnancy, I went to 39 weeks and 2 days.
At 35 weeks and 3 days according to my dating ultrasound, I started taking the Red Raspberry Leaves Supplement 2 pills once a day.
