Question:
My husband and I are trying to conceive. I started learning about charting and drove myself crazy for a few cycles. He suggested a relaxed approach. We still haven't gotten pregnant after a few cycles of "being relaxed". Is there a downside to using the relaxed approach?
My Answer:
One does have to find a balance when trying to conceive. It’s easy to burn yourself out and let it consume every thought. For some people, a relaxed approach works.
The down side with a relaxed approach often is if you don’t know where you are in your cycle, you may be decreasing your chances of becoming pregnant.
- You may not know what increases your chances of becoming pregnant because you’re not increasing your fertility knowledge. Just having sex when the mood feels right doesn’t work for everyone. Having a basic knowledge of trying to conceive can sometimes help in increasing your chances of becoming pregnant.
- You could be timing intimacy at the wrong times and miss your fertile days if you’re using an app that is estimating your fertile days without any other information, such as the results from ovulation tests or fertility monitors, and taking your temps. I feel the combination of these things can help pinpoint a better picture of when you will ovulate and help increase your chances of becoming pregnant.
- If you’re not trying every other day and every day during your fertile days, there is a good chance you can completely miss your egg. In fact, I've read the best days to try is 1-3 days before you ovulate, so the sperm is already waiting for the egg.
- If you’re only checking once a day for ovulation, you can also miss the surge and may never see a positive ovulation test.
