Question: Did the genetic testing results for your child's Autism influence your decision on whether or not to have more children?
She also said the genetic testing was more for the parents. It was an option to know if there were any links, in case my spouse (at the time) and I wanted to have more children. She was also clear that they can't guarantee that we won't have another child with autism. She said, "No one can make that sort of promise regardless of what they find or don't find."
The short answer is:
No.
The longer answer is:
It was only one visit. The geneticist offered optional genetic testing. She would have only continued with us to do sibling and parental testing if they had found anything. In our child's case, they were unable to find the cause of his autism on their tests. She also said the genetic testing was more for the parents. Honestly, this one-time visit really has zero influence on having another child. The only information it gave is my child is autistic. They confirmed a suspicion his therapists and pediatrician already had. The genetic testing did not add or take away anything.
My husband (at the time) and I decided for ourselves when we look at our happy, healthy, growing, thriving child that his having autism is not a deal-breaker for us in terms of having more children.
