Research Different Birthing Locations

It’s important to research your desired birth location, because polices, staff location, and facilities are always changing.

For example, there is one large hospital in my city. The hospital continued to grow. Instead of reconstructing the old building, they went to a location five or so minutes away and constructed a new building to be the other part of the hospital. Now there are two locations for this one hospital, and each building houses different floors, such as the new one has the emergency room, but the old one has labor and delivery and the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit. What is interesting is that if you need to go to labor and delivery, you must go to the old hospital building, because the new one doesn’t have one. Also if you’re pregnant and you’re under 20 weeks, you will be seen at the new hospital in the Emergency Room. If you’re 20 + weeks, you will be seen in the Labor & Delivery at the old hospital. So knowing both locations is important. Imagine if you didn’t know that in the middle of labor or during an emergency in early pregnancy? Also since living in this city for the past 7 years, our labor and delivery unit has changed. After I had my first, they added 2 rooms that had labor tubs. After I had my second, they added 2 low intervention birthing suites.

Likewise, with my third pregnancy I am desiring to attempt a home birth. It is necessary for me to know how far the hospital is from my home incase i need to be transfered. In the case that I do, my husband, the midwife and I would ride together to the hospital. Also to do a test run to see how long it takes to get to the hospital. It is also important for my husband and I know how to prepare our home for the birth, since we are the ones responsible for setting it up unlikes a birthing center or hospital that is prepared already.
